The Prince of Wales Shaft Site is situated at the head of the Clannacombe Valley (neer Minions). The Phoenix United Mine operated in the 19th and early 20th century and recoverred large amounts of copper and tin. The mine got deeper and wetter in search of tin. The final reworking of the mine in the early 20th century produced very little tin. The Phoenix United Mine closed in 1914.
The Prince of Wales Shaft Site is the most substantial relic of the Phoenix United Mine. At it's height the mine coverred a considerable area: down into the Clannacombe Valley and following the Course of Stowes Great Lode to Hamilton's Shaft, Stowes Shaft and down and across the Witheybrook Valley to the West Phoenix Mine.
